Sand Lizard

Sand Lizard by Linda Yarrow
Sand Lizard, a photo by Linda Yarrow on Flickr.

We went to Higher Hyde, one of Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserve hoping to catch sight of some Sand Lizards.  We found this one basking on an old tyre.  Sadly this poor thing has got some ticks.  This nature reserve is surrounded by tanks, guns, quarries and their huge lorries, making this reserve not the most peaceful place to visit, particularly with the clay pigeon shot gun club right next to the reserve, guns going off every minute.  This place seems to be the best place to find Sand Lizards as there old tyres and heaps of tiles which these lizards like to bask on, warming themselves up.

Never seen one of these before.

Keith, They are not the easiest creatures to find.

Things do get a little noisy around Bovington Lyn. Amazing colours on that Lizard.

What a lovely little creature! The reserve doesn't sound the most tranquil of places though.

Roy, It is incredibly noisy around this reserve, but it does not seem to bother the wildlife there.

ShySongbird, The reserve is also next to a golf course, there are loads of golf balls on the edge of the reserve.

Great picture Linda, shame about the ticks, not sure how damaging they are?
I have seen this species of lizard at Blue Poole. Wish I was around Bovington, tanks or no tanks. Weather has been awful here.
